Gara Gombe Lacks Confident In Super Eagles Winning AFCON Title in Cote D’Ivoire

Published

on

Former Gombe United Football Association chairman, Ahmed Gara-Gombe  says the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) made a big mistake appointing Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles head coach.

Peseiro has been widely criticised since taking charge of the Super Eagles due to the team’s poor display and results.

The Super Eagles started the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on a disappointing note with two draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

The NFF has mandated the Portuguese  to win the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire to retain his job.

Gara-Gombe  stated that the former Venezuela and Saudi Arabia coach  is not good enough to manage the Super Eagles.

He noted that the super eagles does not have a pattern, a style of play, and have  struggled to win games.

” I have no confidence in the super eagles winning the Afcon . What we have is individual skills but the managerial aspect is lacking.

Let us go and keep on trying our cut and paste strategy, our wobble and fumble strategy,”  Gara Gombe said

For Nigeria to get it right Gara gombe questioned the competence of the technical department of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)

He attributed the continued shameful performance of the Nigerian teams to the incompetence and inefficiency of the personnel in the technical department of the NFF,

He said as far as the appointment of coaches for the national teams are based on political consideration instead of competence and development, Nigeria will go nowhere in the development of football.

“In recent times, Nigeria’s football has been witnessing embarrassing performances from both the national teams and club level in continental competitions. These are happening because NFF has no plans to develop the game. Their main focus is on competitions and not development

“As much as  NFF continues to appoint coaches based on political consideration for competitions instead of development,  the country’s football is going nowhere . In the last 15 years, I do not think there is a blueprint or roadmap that was produced that was sustainable or implemented by NFF. It has been trial and error.

“I have always said that we don’t have a league, we only have teams playing amongst themselves. Look at how Al-Merrikh of Sudan dealt with Enyimba that we were hoping on for a good outing on the continent.you cannot give what you don’t have  Gara lamented.

“About five year ago, Amaju Pinnick took Sunday Oliseh to Nigerian Stock Exchange, saying he is the face of Nigeria’s football and the Guardiola of Africa, and gave him responsibility to produce a roadmap for Nigeria’s football but at the end he was not allowed to implement the plan. Late Amodu Shuaibu also came up with a developmental plan but they didn’t allow him to implement it. He said
