NSC DG Bukola Olopade Charges Invited Junior Athletes, IJA, To Make History At Gateway Games

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Hon Bukola Olopade, has charged the Country’s Invited Junior Athletes ( IJA), contingents to see their participation at the forthcoming 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State as a bold step towards their Sporting Greatness.
The DG gave the charge when he visited the Athletes in their training camp in Abuja on Wednesday, where he held an exciting interactive discussion with them to boost their morals ahead of the Games.
Nigeria Sports is currently receiving a breath of fresh air with the IJA concept where the very best of the Country’s young athletes across multiple Sports have been selected to feature as the 38th State at the Sports Festival.
The NSC DG reminded the athletes that they are the future of the country’s Sports and that is why Mr President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, backed the Commission to create the IJA concept into the Sports festival, starting with the Gateway Games.
” This is the first time Nigeria is having this sort of arrangement. That means for those of you who finally makes it to Abeokuta, your names would have been written in the history book forever. So work very hard to qualify to go to Abeokuta”.
” We created the Invited Junior Athletes concept because we believe in the talents of young people that are bound in this country. If you have gone to the Youth Games and you are champion, let us then see how you grow into the elite cadre. And the only way you can grow into that cadre is by competing and beating the Elite Athletes”.
“I want to assure you all that if you win 10 Gold medals at the Festival in Ogun State, you have a big gift from the chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikkko”.
” Once again I have come to say thank you for your service to the nation, thank you for loving what you know how to do best and above all to charge you that this thing that you have started, May God lead and guide you all to greater heights”.
The IJA will compete in about nine Sports at the Gateway Games which including ; Athletics, Badminton, Football, Para Athletics, Swimming, Table tennis, tennis, Wrestling and weightlifting.

NSC Advances Vision Of Nigeria As a Global Sporting Hub, As International Gymnastics Course Holds In Abuja

The National Sports Commission (NSC) continues to make significant strides in positioning Nigeria into a global sporting hub, as the ongoing 2025/2028 International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) Judges Course takes center stage in Abuja.
Running from May 10th to 14th, 2025, the prestigious FIG MAG International Judges Course has drawn participants from across the continent — including Algeria, Egypt, Cameroon, South Africa, and host nation Nigeria — under the expert guidance of Russia’s Dimitri Andreev, a respected FIG official.
The course aims to develop high-caliber gymnastics judges, laying the groundwork for a brighter future for the sport in Africa.
Under the leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, the NSC has tasked national sports federations with raising the bar in local talent discovery and international relevance — a challenge they are meeting with renewed vigor.
Commending the Nigeria Gymnastics Federation for its exceptional hosting of the event, the NSC noted that such achievements are part of a broader national strategy to attract international sports events and foster capacity development.
“This course is yet another step in our mission to make Nigeria a preferred destination for international sporting activities,” said DG, Hon. Bukola Olopade.
Nigeria’s credentials as a regional sports powerhouse continues to grow. Earlier in the year, Nigeria hosted the ECOWAS African Wrestling Championship with 11 countries participating in celebration of ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary. Similarly, in late 2024, Nigeria hosted the 2nd African Military Games — “AMGA Abuja 2024” — further solidifying its leadership in African sports diplomacy.
A number of Nigerian sports Federation presidents are also gaining traction in global sports governance. Francis Orbih (badminton), Daniel Igali (wrestling) and Prince kelvin Erhunmwunse (gymnastics) have recently secured influential international appointments in their respective international sports federation bodies, while more are poised to follow in this footstep.
As the FIG course progresses in Abuja, the NSC remains steadfast in its mission — creating opportunities, building expertise, and placing Nigeria firmly on the map as a center for sporting excellence.

Nigerian Para-Cyclists Make Golden Statement In Cairo With Four Medals

Nigeria’s para-cycling team delivered a commanding performance at the ongoing African Para-Cycling Track Championships in Cairo, Egypt, securing four gold medals in a historic outing.
The team’s success was powered by two exceptional pairings:
Tijani Daramola and his pilot Okeyah Bethel Temple clinched gold in the men’s Tandem B Class events, excelling in both the Sprints and the Individual Pursuit categories.
In the women’s equivalent, Favour Omo and her pilot Tawakalt Yekeen matched the feat by claiming gold in both the Sprints and Individual Pursuit, also in the Tandem B Class.
This remarkable medal haul places Nigeria among the top-performing nations at the championships and reflects the athletes’ rigorous preparation and commitment.
It also highlights the increasing depth of talent within the para-sport community in Nigeria, under the guidance of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN).
The Nigerian contingent is not done yet. Today, they return to the track for the 1km Time Trial event, aiming to further bolster their medal tally.
Meanwhile, attention now also turns to the start of the African Track Championships for able-bodied cyclists, beginning this afternoon. Women’s elite and junior teams will compete in events including Team Pursuits and Team Sprints.
With momentum on their side, Nigeria’s cycling teams—both para and able-bodied—are set to leave a lasting impression in Cairo.
