Ogunsanwo, Obasami Win South West Badminton Championship

The second edition of the annual South West badminton championship came to a successful end on Easter Sunday with a new champion emerging.

The three day championship held at the Indoor Sports of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere Lagos saw Emmanuel Ogunsanwo of Lagos State defeating the reigning Champion also from Lagos State, Daniel Christopher Ebonyi by two straight sets of 21-15, 21-19 to emerge winner in the male’s singles category just as Jumoke Obasami also of Lagos State defeated  Dorcas Adesokun of Ogun State by 2-0 of 21-16, 21- 9 to emerge champion in the women’s singles final.

In the same vein, David Edun of Ogun State beat Israel Gbajobi also of Ogun State by 2-1 to emerge winner of the U-15 boy’s category while Omotayo Oguntayo of Ogun State defeated her compatriot, Salimat Ogunsola to win the girl’s  category.

The men Doubles event was won by David Christopher Ebonyi and Abel Joseph who defeated Rowland Okunola and Amos Ohirame by 2-0 of 21-11 and 23-22.

Speaking at the event, Chairman Lagos State Badminton Association, John Duru Esq, while explaining that the championship was put together to further developed the racket game in the South West geopolitical zone of the country as well as for talent hunt,  expressed happiness with the level of the competition even as he 

 commended Ogun State team for dominating the junior category.

“We organised this tournament inorder to discover new talents, expose them  and develop the game of badminton in the  South West  and I’m happy with the performance of the players.

” To show you the importance of this championship, both the President of Badminton Federation of Nigeria and the national coach are all here because this championship serves as  a breeding ground for future  national team players 

” As you can see, the defending champion was defeated in the finals by a fellow Lagos State  team player which shows the level of the competition and unlike in the maiden edition where Lagos State carted away almost all the medals,  Ogun State won all the junior categories in this year’s edition which serves as a wake up call to Lagos State.

Duru who stated that the successes recorded in the maiden edition made it possible for the continuation of the tournament, commended Lagos State Government, the State’s Sports Commission and it’s Director General as well as their sponsors for ensuring that the championship holds.

Also speaking, President of Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih praised the association for putting up such a tournament with an appeal to other geopolitical zones in the country to emulate Lagos State in the development of the game.

In a message he sent to the tournament, Director General of Lagos State Sports Commission, Olalekan Falodu commended the association for the championship, promising that the Commission will continue to ensure that sports is developed at the grassroots in the state.

Nigerian Cyclist Samuel Fasema Completes Epic Lagos to Maiduguri Ride

The Nigeria cycling federation has praised the exploits of ex nigerian cyclist Samuel fasema who rode from Lagos to Maiduguri and back for not only promoting peace but also promoting the enormous benefits of the sport

Samuel Fasema rode for peace and unity, against drug abuse and for renewed hope this year the ride to Maiduguri is his 2nd having embarked on such journey in 2024 to Benue state

Fasema who arrived Lagos on Saturday February 7 was joined by team mates led by chairman of ft cycle care cycling Club femi Thomas at Berger where they rode through ojota, Anthony, palm groove, stadium , CMS, third mainland bridge and terminated at the clubs office in fadeyi to the warm embrace of families, friends and well wishers

Samuel fasema who has passion for cycling speaks on how the journey went and his next project

“I thank God I was able to achieve this, it was easy some never believed I would be able to ride to Maiduguri and back but I did. Am looking at going a step forward by registering for the Guiness book of word record soon ” He said

“What Samuel did is very ramarlable no one has done it in the history in this country . We will continue to encourage him and hope that the private sector can come in and support the federation discover more Samuels ” He said

Captain ft cycle care cycling Club, Francis Agbo, a team mate of Samuel fasema expressed delight for successful mission while also calling on the corporate world support the cyclist with ambassadorial award to serve as a beacon of hope to athletes who go the extra mile in showcasing nigeria in a good light

The 19 days ride on bicycle covered a distance of 3,776.03 kilometers

Magic Boyz raid in marina

It was pandemonium as 10 young Boyz dressed in dreaded outfit struck fear into the hearts of
residents and business community of Marina , Lagos island, Marina is one of the major
business hub in Lagos and Africa

The Boyz who alighted from an unregistered white ford bus and walked to the front of one of the banks in Marina, 5 were outside while 5 entered and came out after 20mins withs black bags on their backs When they came out they immediately took to their bicycles and rode around the the marina
road

The Boyz were dreadful and scary looking, nobody could even confront them , no police in sight,the nscdc team available ran for their lives

They rode on bicycles all around the marina road and stopping batches until there were only 4
riding

3 of the Boyz raised their hands and were shouting the Magic is Coming

The area Boyz in the environment had to clear the road for them to leave when they were ready
to leave

People and onlookers couldn’t believe what they just witnessed
Some people ran for fear while others observed from afar
One who wonder what they mean by the Magic is Coming

The Magic Boyz also shared some items from their bags to the agbero Boyz and onlookers
Some people where excited to see such things while others where worried on what this could
mean.

One eye witness said 

“If you see as the boyz be ehn, you go fear them 

No shaking as them they waka and ride their bicycles up and down”

Another eye witness said that 

“this is a strange occurrence in broad day light and that the
government should look in it”

Golden Triumph: Eniola Bolaji Shines at Egypt Para Badminton International 2025.

Paralympic bronze medalist Eniola Bolaji has etched her name in history once again by clinching gold at the Egypt Para Badminton International 2025.

In a commanding performance, Bolaji defeated Sweden’s Hillevi Salomonsson 2-0 (21-1, 21-2) in the women’s SL3 final on Sunday, underscoring her dominance in the event. The African champion also showcased her prowess throughout the tournament, overcoming Shahinda Mohamed (21-7, 21-2), Basma Nabil-Fawzy (21-6, 21-4), and Elizabeth Puma (21-2, 21-4) with straight-set victories in earlier rounds.

According to the Badminton World Federation, Bolaji has competed in 10 international championships over the past two years, emerging victorious in all—a remarkable feat that cements her as a force to be reckoned with in Para Badminton.

Reacting to her triumph, Francis Orbih, President , Badminton Federation of Nigeria, celebrated Bolaji’s achievement, highlighting its significance for Nigerian sports.

“Eniola Bolaji’s gold medal at the Egypt International 2025 is a testament to her unparalleled talent and dedication. As the first and only African medalist in Para Badminton at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, she has once again brought immense pride to Nigeria. Winning 10 consecutive international tournaments is no small feat; she is a national treasure and a global icon,” Orbih stated.

He added that Bolaji’s success is a beacon of hope for both Para Badminton and Badminton in Nigeria, inspiring athletes to strive for excellence in 2025.

Looking ahead, Orbih reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to hosting world-class events, including the Para Badminton International Championship and the All Africa para badminton championship in Abia State this October.

“The Badminton Federation of Nigeria, in collaboration with Abia State, is determined to deliver a successful Para Badminton International Championship and the All-African Para Badminton Championship. We are fully committed to meeting and exceeding international standards,” Orbih concluded.

Bolaji’s victory not only marks a golden start to the year but also solidifies her status as a trailblazer in Nigerian and African Badminton/Para badminton.
